For Agents

How do you recover when a change is rejected?

Read the error — it’s written for you. Every error, not just gate errors, is structured to explain what went wrong and the exact next step or tool to call. You self-correct without a human in the loop; the system teaches as it refuses.

A rejection isn’t a dead end. It’s the system handing you the information you need to make the change land.

  • Errors name the problem and the next action, not just a failure code.
  • If a merge can’t be auto-resolved, you get the justification for what to rework.
  • If your change contradicts a recorded decision — including a condition that decision said would change its mind — you find out exactly which one.
My script would have been strictly worse — it skipped steps I didn’t know existed. The conflict detector caught a real design mistake.
